An Kindness of People We Don't Know: The Way a Gentleman I Barely Knew Supported Me Obtain the Role That Changed My Life

During the closing decade of the 80s, I was embarking on a low-cost journey to Europe with a travel partner. Since my companion was exploring pursuing a master’s degree in NYC, we had planned a 14-day stopover there on the way to London.

We arrived at the graduate housing, a large multi-story edifice on the UWS known as International House. Once we unpacked, we made our way to the cafeteria, where we picked up meals, took a seat, and engaged in conversation with fellow residents.

Sitting next to me was an gentleman from Iraq pursuing an engineering degree at an Ivy League institution. He inquired what I my profession was, and I explained that I had just graduated with a degree in science and had been working on studies using an electron microscope.

He pointed out that there was an microscopy facility at Columbia University – right next door to the engineering department, which was how he knew about it. He suggested that I consider applying for a job with them. I laughed it off, explaining that I was about to fly to Europe and, even more importantly, I didn’t have a US visa.

The following day I went out exploring, coming back to the dining hall that night. The Iraqi student came up to me and informed me that he had set up a meeting for me with the head of the electron microscope unit at Columbia. Since he had taken the effort, I went to the meeting – but immediately told my host that I was without a work permit, so I was unable to accept the role.

As is common in NYC – a place where anything feels possible – she said: “We'll handle it. What's your start date?” I missed my plane to London.

I was employed there for 36 months. A perk of the job was that I got no-cost classes at Columbia, and I used the opportunity to finish a graduate degree in global studies.

I never saw that student again and I can't recall his identity, but his remarkable generosity transformed my future in numerous aspects. I lacked the bravery or nerve to contact anyone at an Ivy League university and ask for a job. And, I had long dreamed to pursue education overseas, but could never have afforded it without that free tuition.

Critically, that gig at Columbia led me to a role in Europe where I met my handsome spouse from France, with whom I currently share four amazing children. It was a total sliding doors moment. That benevolent individual redirected my path in life, and I’m eternally thankful.
